Most people in Malawi work on farms, trying to grow enough food to live. They grow maize, beans, rice, cassava, tobacco and peanuts.

Children also have to work to help support their families. Children whose parents have died usually have to give up school to work and pay for food. Sometimes there are young brothers and sisters to look after too.

This is very hard work when you are young and get tired easily and really would like to play with your friends.

Enelise says: “We draw water for other people and we also assist on construction sites and make bricks. I just do it because I have to. Drawing water for people is hard, very hard.”
